The Catalyst
Dave Flynn formulated his idea for the Clare Memory Orchestra during the period of 2006-2010 when he was undertaking a Research PhD at the Dublin Insitute of Technology entitled 'Traditional Irish Music: A Path to New Music'. At the same time Dave was collaborating with Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill, Mick O'Brien and various other musicians in the creation of new music which crossed the boundaries between traditional Irish music and contemporary classical music.
These events ultimately led to the formation of the Clare Memory Orchestra. So here, presented to the public for the first time, is the entire text of Dave Flynn's PhD 'Traditional Irish Music: A Path to New Music' which proved to be the path to the Clare Memory Orchestra.
The PhD includes a detailed academic analysis of traditional Irish music from a compositional point of view and also refers in detail to many composers and musicians who have previously engaged with traditional Irish music in the context of modern classical music. The thesis ends with Dave Flynn's analysis of the music he created alongside his research.
Readers should note this analysis was a mandatory aspect of the PhD and the text reflects the cold, analytical approach required of academia. The compositions were not created in such an analytical fashion!
